Idaho Continuing Education FAQs

Question: When do I have to renew my Idaho license?
Answer:To avoid late fees, you must renew your license on or before the expiration date, which is the last day of your second consecutive birth month following the issuance of your first license; and the last day of your birth month every two years after that. For example, if you were issued your first license in April of 2004, but your birthday is in October, your first license will expire at 5pm on the last day of October, 2005. Subsequent renewals are based on a two-year period from birth month to birth month.

Question: What are the requirements for license renewal?
Answer: You are required to complete at least 16 hours of elective continuing education courses during each renewal period, in addition to the Commission’s CORE course. All courses must be in approved topic areas. In addition, you will need to provide certification that you have met the continuing education requirements; certification that you have met the mandatory errors and omissions insurance requirement; and pay all associated renewal fees.

Question: Am I required to take 16 hours while my license is on inactive status?
Answer: Continuing education is not required to renew an inactive license. However, before you can reactivate your license beyond your initial term, you will need to have completed 16 hours of continuing education electives and the Commission’s CORE course in the two years prior to reactivation. Licensees on inactive status, within their initial term, do not need to complete the continuing education requirement before switching their license to active status.

Question: My license is going to expire on Friday. What happens if I don’t renew it before the 5pm deadline?
Answer: You can renew your license up to one year after it expires if you pay a $25 late fee in addition to your renewal fee. However, until you properly renew your expired license, you will be on expired status and may NOT practice as a licensee. A Late License Renewal/Affidavit form will be required for late renewal of a license on active status.

Question: My license wasn’t renewed within 12 months of expiration. Now what happens?
Answer: If you miss the 12 month deadline, your license will be terminated. If you decide to pursue real estate again in the future, you will have to complete all of the licensing requirements again, including fingerprinting, pre-licensing education, the license examination, and errors & omissions insurance.
