With the passage of the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Lending Act of 2008 (SAFE Act), the requirements for getting a loan originator license changed. Now, licensing requirements and testing is handled by the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS).
Anyone applying for a mortgage loan originator license after July 31, 2009, but before January 1, 2010, must::
a) Pass the NMLS tests (both national and state portions)
b) Complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved prelicense education by December 31, 2009
Anyone applying for a mortgage loan originator license after January 1, 2010, must:
a) Pass the NMLS tests (both national and state portions)
b) Complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved prelicense education before obtaining a license
To apply for your license, you must:
a) Complete Form MU4 via the NMLS and pay the $155 licensing fee
b) Submit one fingerprint card
