What Is a Certified Negotiation Expert?
A Certified Negotiation Expert (CNE) is a real estate agent who has completed formal negotiation training and earned the CNE designation from the Real Estate Negotiation Institute. The designation signals to buyers and sellers that their agent has studied how deals get made and how to protect a client’s interests at the table.
That training pays off because negotiation shapes the outcome of a transaction more than almost any other skill an agent brings. A prepared negotiator reads the other side accurately and structures offers that hold up when the pressure is on. Clients feel the difference in stronger terms and in fewer deals that collapse late in the process.
The skills behind the designation are where the value starts, and they reach across every phase of a deal.

How to Become a Certified Negotiation Expert
Becoming a Certified Negotiation Expert takes a single course, with no application process and no renewal fees once you finish.
Start by choosing your format. The livestream package runs about 12 hours of live instruction, while the self-paced package lets you complete the same material on your own schedule. Both cover the negotiation methods that define the CNE designation.
Once you complete the course, the designation is yours. You also receive a marketing kit built to put the credential to work, including your designation badge and a branded email signature.
After that, the designation stays active without ongoing fees, so your cost is the course and nothing more. Agents who have taken that path describe the payoff in their own words below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Negotiation is a learned skill that improves with structured training and practice. The CNE course is built around teachable methods you can apply to your own transactions, which is why agents at every experience level take it. The more you practice the techniques, the more naturally they show up when you are at the table.
Yes, CNE Livestream course counts for 12 hours and CNE self-paced course counts for 6 hours of CE credit.
We do not require renewal fees to maintain an active designation. Once you complete the course, you have earned the designation, and it does not expire.
The most common mistakes come down to preparation and self-control. Agents often talk more than they listen, which gives away leverage, and many reveal their client’s deadline or bottom line too early in the conversation. Letting emotion drive a counteroffer is another frequent misstep. Strong negotiators slow down and let the other side fill the silence, and they ask questions before making concessions. The CNE methods are built to reinforce those habits.
We would like you to fully engage in the class and commit to its full length so that you can get the best results. This means keeping your camera on, participating in the conversation and questions, and refraining from leaving and returning, multitasking, or driving. This commitment ensures that you fully experience the value of our designation and the expected outcomes of your achievement while maintaining the integrity and recognition of the RENI designations. The moderator will require Livestream Students to:
– Be on camera and on-screen for 90% of class. Frequent breaks are provided
– Participate in 80% of polls.
– Participate in the Final Exam.
